This stunning Peter Allan is owned by Sven van Straaten of Port Elizabeth and was recently entered in the 2020 Eroica SA Bicycle Concourse where it was awarded Best South African Bicycle on show.
The bike was pointed out to me by Kamaal Martin and was for sale on Gumtree.
It was purchased for the sum of R1200 and then couriered from Cape Town to Port Elizabeth. On arrival the bike was stripped as non of the parts were good enough for the restoration. The color was a dirty brick red and did absolutely nothing for the appearance of this grand old lady.
The bike was taken to my LBS where Theo Seale (master bike builder) conducted a full frame geometry alignment to it. The bike was now straight and ready to be stripped.
A member on our WhatsApp group, Glen Abrahams solved the availability of the Peter Allan decals.
Next step the frame was taken to Henry the paint specialist for recommendations on color. He chose the color that is on the bike now because he thought it brought the frame alive especially with the contrast of the red decals. Once painted, decaled and clear coated the frame’s transformation was amazing. The choice of components was medium range Suntour as we did not want the frame to be dominated by top end equipment. Two problems then arose. Firstly we could not find the crank set we required so we stripped off a 1st Edition Superbe Pro from one of my other bikes and were happy to see how it blended into the look we were trying to create. The second problem was that this frame needed long reach brake calipers so we had to source a set of Weinmann centre pulls. The result was in my opinion the classic old style look which we wanted. Black Christophe toe clips and toe straps were fitted and the cherry on the top was the red contrasting perforated handle bar tape.
All in all a nice project especially with being rewarded the best South African Bike on show at Eroica made all the effort worthwhile.
